Mo Willems' Week Spanish and Bilingual Story Time and Crafts: February 7th and 9th, 2013

Our library has a fantastic week celebrating Mo Willems during his birthday week! There were special story times all week, and Spanish and Bilingual Story Time (recently, the brand name for Story Time was changed from StoryTime to Story Time, which is why you see that change from previous plans) did not miss out since Mr. Willems has Spanish translations of Pigeon and Knuffle Bunny books! I did translate The Pigeon Has Feelings, Too! as I read the story since there isn't a Spanish version.

We had wonderful crafts, including a photo "book" booth. One of my amazing colleagues made a giant We Are in a Book! book with a large square cut out so kids could pretend they were on the cover and have their picture taken. It was a hit!

See below the story time plans for some of the crafts we had during the week (the ones I have included are the ones I used for the Spanish and bilingual story time programs)! Mo Willems website has tons of fun things to do and print out, too! Check it out at: http://www.mowillems.com/

We're going to use our magic finger to draw the letter "P" in the air. ¿Cuales otras cosas empiezan con la letra "P"? What things start with the letter "P"? (Show the penguin) In Spanish, the word for penguin is pingüino, and both start with the letter "P." What are these animals (show duck and dog)? Crafts:
Coloring Pages (courtest of Mo Willems' website...just add crayons!)

Knuffle Bunny Masks (courtesy of Michele M.)
You'll Need:
-paper plates
-scissors
-card stock to print bunny ears on
-crayons
-craft (Popsicle) sticks
-tape or glue

Instructions
-We pre-cut the eye holes in the paper plates to make things easier/faster for the kids/families.

1. Color the bunny ears with crayons.
2. Cut out the ears.
3. Color the paper plate (light green for Knuffle Bunny or have the kids be as creative as they want to be with this) and draw a bunny nose and mouth.
4. Glue or tape the ears behind the paper plate so that the colored parts face out when the kids put the mask to their face.
5. Glue or tape the bottom of the paper plate to a craft (Popsicle) stick, so that it acts as a handle for the mask.

Pigeon Ps (courtesy of Amber O.V.)
You'll Need:
-light blue construction paper
-yellow construction paper
-white crayon
-black marker
-glue stick
-letter P die-cut
-circle cutter

Instructions
-We had all the pieces pre-cut to make things easier/faster for the kids/families.
*Using the blue paper, cut a bunch of circles with a circle cutter (this makes Pigeon's head)
*Using the blue paper, cut out the letter P's. This makes Pigeon's body (the curve of the P makes his booty). Use the inner part of the P to  make his wing.
*Using the yellow construction paper, cut tiny yellow triangles to make Pigeon's beak.
-Now that the pieces are cut...
1. Draw Pigeon's eye on the blue circle.
2. Glue his beak to the blue circle.
3. Take the letter P and flip him upside down and over so that the curved part of the P makes Pigeon's booty.
4. Draw Pigeon's leg along the bottom.
5. Glue Pigeon's head (the circle) to his body/legs.
6. Draw Pigeon's neck ring with two lines and color the inside of it white.
7. Glue Pigeon's wing.
