Pizza Spanish and Bilingual StoryTime and Craft: August 23rd and August 25th, 2012

To kick off the fall 2012 season of Spanish and Bilingual StoryTime programs in August, I did a pizza-themed program with a fun paper plate pizza craft. Normally, I use one story (the 3rd story) with a prop or flannel board, but since many of the pizza stories I used weren't available in the Spanish story telling collection, I ended up acting out three stories with my own translations.

The Craft: Paper Plate Pizzas

You'll need:
Paper plates
Glue stick
Red markers or red crayons to color in sauce
Shredded yellow paper or yellow yarn for cheese
Circles cut from red construction paper for pepperoni
Small pieces of green construction paper for bell pepper

And if you have time for extra toppings:
-Small black paper circles for olives (use a hole puncher to make rings)
-Crumpled pieces of brown paper bags for sausage
-Light brown construction paper to cut mushrooms using die-cuts (as a county employee, I was able -to use the local county office of education's media center for this part)

I put the "toppings" in plastic sandwich baggies, so the kids couldn't argue about "who had more pepperoni," etc. and placed the bags on top of individual paper plates set on tables the day of the craft.

Instructions for the kids:
-Color the middle of their paper plate with red crayon or red marker
-Use the glue stick to glue down the cheese (it's important to glue the cheese first because then the other toppings get covered up)
-Proceed to glue on other toppings

Most importantly, have fun! When I did this with the kids, a little boy kept saying, "¡Una llanta! (A tire!)" when he saw the "olives." :-)
